A homemade aluminum cleaner for cookware is composed of cream of tartar and white vinegar or lemon juice. A mixture of tomatoes and rhubarb can be used to clean smaller aluminum items. Lemon juice, water and vinegar are used to clean aluminum windows and door frames. Alkaline products, such as ammonia or baking soda, should be avoided in a homemade aluminum cleaner to prevent discoloration.
To clean an aluminum pan, fill it with 1/2 cup of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar for every quart of water. The solution should first be allowed to boil for 10 minutes. The pan is now ready for a regular cleaning after pouring out the solution and allowing it time to cool. Lemon juice can also be used instead of vinegar in the same quantity.
Tomatoes and rhubarb are used to clean smaller aluminum items by filling a container with water and placing the ingredients into it. After placing the aluminum item into the container, bring everything to a boil, and wipe the item dry after cooling.
Rubbing an aluminum window or door frame with lemon slices and spraying a mixture of 4 cups of water and 1 cup of vinegar brings back the original shine of the surface.
