To make a cup of cappuccino, you need an espresso machine with a built-in steaming wand, fresh milk and espresso coffee. Although whole milk produces the best results, low-fat and skim milk can also be used.
To prepare a cup of cappuccino, take about 2 ounces of cold milk and pour into a steaming pitcher. Operate the steaming wand for a couple of seconds to release any water that may be inside. With the steaming wand, place the tip into the milk and start the jet. As the foam begins to rise, tilt the pitcher and keep the wand submerged in the milk until the volume doubles and you achieve your desired consistency of foam. When done, firmly tap the pitcher on the counter top until the foam compresses.
Once the foam has been made, prepare 1 ounce espresso according to the specific espresso machine being used. Pour the espresso into a cappuccino cup and then gently pour the foamed milk into the center of the cup and outwards towards the rim in a circular motion. The cappuccino is now ready to drink. Depending on the preference of the drinker, sugar may be added and the drink may be garnished with chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg or vanilla powder.
