Full Answer

To maintain low levels of thatch and debris as well as high resistance to pests, do not underfeed or overfeed the grass with fertilizer. The main feeding of the grass is done in the spring and summer with 15 pounds of fertilizer per 1000 square feet of lawn area. Supplemental feedings are spaced out 50 to 60 days apart and are done by applying two to three pounds of nitrogen during the growing season. Refer to North Carolina State University's Zoysia grass maintenance calendar for proper maintenance schedules, and adjust for seasonal differences.

For new Zoysia grass lawn care, water the grass for two weeks until the sod is rooted. Once it has rooted and the grass reaches a height of 2 to 3 inches, mow the lawn. For general maintenance, mow Zoysia grass when it reaches a height of 1 to 2 inches.

If the grass is watered and fertilized every seven to 14 days, mow it one to two times a week. If using professional mowers, cut Zoysia grass to 1/2 inch tall. Remove accumulated debris and thatch every other year in the late winter with a commercial machine, if necessary.
