The main differences between Vikrell and acrylic showers are the sorts of materials used in their manufacture, their durability and their resistance to different types of chemicals. While acrylic showers are made mostly of vacuum-molded acrylic plastic sheets that incorporate small amounts of glass fibers, Vikrell is a resin-based plastic that incorporates large amounts of glass fibers.
Both Vikrell and acrylic showers are relatively durable, lightweight and affordable materials for showers. While acrylic is slightly more durable than Vikrell, which is more similar to fiberglass, acrylic plastics react with certain chemicals in personal cleaning products while Vikrell does not.
Many shampoos, soaps and body washes contain acidic or basic chemicals that can react with acrylic showers, eventually making the shower faded and discolored. The large amount of glass fibers used in manufacturing Vikrell makes the material much more chemically inert than acrylic plastics, meaning Vikrell showers retain their colors longer than those made from acrylics.
Acrylic showers have a major drawback when damaged. Repairing acrylic showers is not always possible, and even in situations where the shower can be repaired, these repairs are very expensive. On the other hand, Vikrell, like other types of fiberglass, is very easy and inexpensive to repair.
