Laminated veneer lumber, also known as LVL beams, are generally available for purchase in preset sizes, but it is also possible to order them to a certain specification from many lumber suppliers. Common preset sizes range from 1.75 to 3.5 inch thickness and 7.25 to 24 inch depth.
LVL lumber is often used in wide expanses, custom size doorways and varying window layouts. LVL lumber is also used for floor beams and ridge and hip beams. This type of lumber is normally treated with a sealant that protects it during construction, but it is not meant for long-term exposure without additional treatment.
