How Low Should the Thermostat Be Set at Night?

Thermostats can be set as low as 58 degrees Fahrenheit at night during the winter. During the day, while an individual is at home, it is best to keep the thermostat set to 68 degrees F. Then, for 8 hours per day, it is beneficial to set it back 10 to 15 degrees to reduce energy consumption on a bill.

During warm weather, a home cooling system should be set to 78 degrees F when people are home, day or night. It can be increased to 88 degrees F when no one is home, so that the cooling system only turns on when the temperature in the house exceeds 88 degrees F.
