The telephone directory blue pages list dumps under the heading "Waste Management." Many communities run waste collection services for household waste, compostable materials, and recyclables. They may collect bulky items and hazardous waste (such as paint, batteries or light bulbs) on certain days or collect them for a fee.
Most communities collect recyclable metals. Some also collect paper, plastic and other materials. Scrap yards accept scrap metal in bulk, as well as used cars.
Composting is an effective way to dispose of food waste and paper, but a compost heap requires space and may not be practical for city residents.Occasionally, communities groups organize special electronic waste collections as fundraisers.
