In 1929, a small company named Floral City Furniture developed the first recliner. It was a padded reclining chair that allowed people to recline back and put up their feet. Not knowing what to call their brand new invention, the brothers who owned Floral City Furniture ran a contest to encourage people to submit potential names. The winning name submitted was "La-Z-Boy," and an iconic brand was born.
Despite it being launched during the Great Depression, La-Z-Boy recliners were extremely popular. The manufacturer soon opened up its own retail stores to make the most of the high sales of their recliners. By 1941, Floral City Furniture decided to establish a separate company named La-Z-Boy Chair Company to focus solely on selling its recliners.
Through the decades, its reclining chairs evolved from just reclining backs to include height adjustable backs, rockers, vibrators, reclining rockers and more. The company took over many other furniture brands, expanding the pieces offered to the public. By 1996, the company name was changed again to La-Z-Boy Incorporated to account for the addition of other brand names.Learn more about Seating
