Korean-manufactured refrigerators are likely to be as reliable as refrigerators manufactured in other countries. Korean refrigerator manufacturers Samsung and LG were among the most reliable brands reported by consumers in a 2014 survey by Consumer Reports. However, certain design features impact the reliability of these refrigerators substantially.
Samsung and LG bottom freezer refrigerators both received top marks for reliability from customers, as reported by Consumer Reports. Their performance in this category beat out Swedish manufacturer Electrolux, as well as large appliance brands Whirlpool and Kitchenaid. Samsung and LG bottom-freezer models were also among the refrigerators recommended as top picks by the editorial staff of Consumer Reports, partially due to their quality of construction and reliability. LG did not score as highly with their side-by-side designs, though Samsung was still among the most reliable manufacturers in this category. Neither Samsung nor LG was top-rated for their top freezer refrigerator designs, but neither were the two Korean brands among the lowest scores for reliability in this category.
The presence of an ice maker is an important influence on the reliability of a refrigerator from any manufacturer, but these devices seem to have an outsize influence on reliability for refrigerators from a Korean manufacturer, according to appliance website ApplianceAssistant. In particular, LG models with ice makers had much higher incidence of repairs as compared to other brands in ApplianceAssistant's data, while models without ice makers were more reliable.
