The kitchen tools and equipment needed in a first home depend on the amount of cooking the people in the home plan to do, but most basic kitchen sets should have at least four sets of flatware and dinnerware. Prepware, cookware, bakeware and other kitchen tools are essential.
Prepware includes any item used to prepare food. At a minimum, a kitchen should have a cutting board, chef's knife, paring and serrated knife, cheese grater and can opener. For those who plan on cooking at home daily, a salad spinner, vegetable peeler and colander are necessary additions.
Cookware necessities include a 2- or 3-quart saute pan, 2-quart saucepan, 4-quart saucepan, 10-inch frying pan and 12-inch frying pan. A vegetable steamer and Dutch oven are two more useful items for the home chef.
Necessary bakeware includes measuring spoons and measuring cups, mixing bowls, a cookie sheet and a baking dish. For people who plan on baking, two cake pans, a muffin tin and a pie pan are important kitchen items.
Other important kitchen tools include a metal spatula, wooden spoon, salt and pepper shakers, a cork screw and oven mitts. Several leftover containers or other storage containers are also useful for the kitchen.
