A kitchen backsplash is a wall covering that goes behind a stovetop or range and sometimes extends behind the surrounding countertops and sink to prevent wall damage from splashes of water or food. These surfaces are usually made from some kind of hard, washable material.
Many backsplashes in industrial kitchens are simply made of stainless steel due to their ease of cleaning. However, some residential kitchens sometimes have more elegantly designed backsplashes. They can be made of hardwood, stone, marble, or any number of other hard, washable materials. The only criteria is that the material must not be capable being stained by anything.
