The kind of stones and rocks that are used in landscaping include decomposed granite, pea gravel, river rock, crushed granite gravel, lava rock and flagstones. Each of these landscaping options offers a different aesthetic or textural quality.
Decomposed granite comes in small pieces of chipped granite rock and is commonly used to line pathways and patios. Pea gravel is also small and used for pathways and patios, but it has a more rounded shape. River rock is about an inch larger than pea gravel and is used to redirect water runoff and provide decoration. Crushed granite gravel is similar to decomposed granite but has a thicker texture. Lava rock is bright red in color and is commonly used for decorating plant areas, while flagstones are typically used for creating stepping stone pathways because of their wide and flat shape.
