To install bed steps, you need some plywood, small posts of varying lengths, wood screws and some basic home tools. A pencil and a tape measure help to map out the dimensions of the step. A circular saw is also helpful.
Clamp two 18-inch-by-36-inch pieces of plywood together. Measure and mark out a clear step pattern on the topmost board. Use the circular saw to cut out along the pattern. Release the clamp, revealing identical side pieces. Attach the needed post lengths along the inside of each plywood section. Continue horizontally, making sure the posts are placed evenly with the step cutout section. Attach three pieces per plywood piece. The pieces act as supports for the steps.
Vertically attach two posts flush with the bottom step's inside section using two screws. Attach a 6-inch-by 15-inch board at the bottom step. Use two screws to attach it flush against the 12-inch-by-15-inch board. Fix a 15-inch-by-18-inch board onto the second step flush with a 12-inch-by-15-inch board using two screws on every side. Measure out the step sections as well as the carpet pieces, and cut off any excess from the carpet. Finally, attach each carpet piece to a corresponding step with the help of a staple gun.
