To install a light switch, remove the old switch from the wall, disconnect the wires, and reconnect them to a new switch. Before beginning this process, disconnect the electricity at the electrical panel, and test the switch to make sure it is off.
- Remove the old switch
Use a screwdriver to take out the screws that hold the cover plate in place. Remove the cover plate. Take out the screws that secure the switch to the wall, and gently remove the switch without pulling on the wires.
- Disconnect the black wires
The old switch is connected to two hot wires that are black or are marked with black electrical tape to indicate they are hot. Disconnect the two black wires. The neutral or ground wires, which can be white, green or copper, are not used in this process. Discard the old switch.
- Connect the new switch
Wind the black wires around the brass terminals of the new switch, and use a screwdriver to tighten the terminals and keep the wires secure. Push the wires back into the wall, and fit the switch into the hole. Secure the switch to the wall by placing long screws through the top and bottom of the switch. Put the cover plate back on, and replace the screws that hold it in place. Turn the power back on.
