Homemade drain cleaner is made out of vinegar and baking soda. The reaction between these two household products helps dislodge and dissolve clogs in sink and bathtub drains.
To unclog a drain using baking soda and vinegar, pour half a cup of baking soda into the clogged drain. If there is a non-removable plug in the way, force the baking soda around it. After the baking soda is in place, pour 1 cup of vinegar down the drain, directly through the baking soda. The vinegar causes the baking soda to foam and bubble. Using a wooden spoon, scoop the foaming baking soda directly into the drain. Quickly close off the drain, using a plug if there is one, to keep the foaming cleaner inside the drain. A dishcloth can be folded and stuffed firmly into the opening of the drain if there is no plug available.
Keeping the drain firmly closed, wait 30 minutes for the mixture to dissolve the clog. To flush the drain, boil a quart of water, open the sink plug or remove the dishcloth, and carefully pour the boiling water down the drain. It may be necessary to repeat the entire process a few times to completely remove a large clog.
