A John Deere VIN provides information on the engine manufacturer, model number and unique serial number. Most VINs will have either 13 or 17 letters or numbers. VIN interpretations vary between these two types.
VINS with 17 characters also include information on the security code, manufacturing year, transmission code, and wheel or track designation. VINs with 13 characters do not contain this information. VINs with 13 characters have an emissions level designation letter at position seven that is not present on 17-character VINS.
Units built in the 60s and 70s have VINS that are five or six characters long. For information decoding VINS on these older John Deere vehicles, contact a John Deere dealer.
