A large patio can be decorated with two or more seating areas, including dining sets made of wicker, or metal or wood sets upholstered in outdoor fabrics. Settees and armchairs are also arranged for relaxation, and dining tables are protected from the sun by umbrellas.
Some patios have barbecue grills, outdoor ovens, firepits or even fireplaces that look very much like those found inside the house. Other patios are decorated with pergolas or have fountains or other water features. They are edged with stone walls that have their own light fixtures. Of course, some patios are built next to swimming pools.
Plantings are also part of many patios. In some, flowering plants are grown in stone urns or in terra cotta pots placed on brick piers set around the patio. Some patios are edged by the grass of the backyard lawn or dwarf bushes. Some of the bushes are trimmed into topiary shapes, and in some patios, concrete slabs are placed with enough space between them to allow for moss or other ground covers to grow. Some patios are also multi-leveled.
Because some concrete floors are beautiful, some homeowners do not decorate them at all but allow them to stand alone. Concrete can be made to resemble stone pavers, flagstone, brick and even wood, and it can be stained, dyed, textured and patterned.
