Mixing essential oils and liquid Castile soap makes a powerful homemade repellent for mosquitoes and other insects. Many of the products available for sale in retail outlets incorporate DEET, a chemical that can be harmful to the environment. Using a homemade alternative is safer for the wearer and the environment.
A solution mixing an ounce of liquid Castile soap with 10 to 15 drops of essential oils keeps insects from coming near. A larger amount can also be mixed, using the same ratio. Essential oils like rose geranium, pennyroyal, lavender or lemon balm (citronella) all work in this type of mixture. Mixing essential oils rather than using just one can lend additional strength to the mixture.
Supplementing this repellent with a couple of nutritional changes increases the effectiveness of the repellent. Adding a daily multivitamin that contains vitamin B-1 (thiamine) can also help keep insects away, as can drinking a couple of tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar on a daily basis. Putting some garlic in one's diet also is effective in repelling insects. Making common sense decisions like staying away from standing water near dusk keeps one away from some of mosquitoes' favorite stomping grounds. Combining these steps increases one's likelihood of staying free of mosquitoes.
