Bed bugs can be killed without hiring a pest control company if the homeowner is able to isolate, clean and spray infested materials and surrounding areas. Washable items should be double-bagged and washed in hot water, then placed in the dryer for a minimum of 30 minutes. Nonwashable items can be sprayed or double-bagged and left outside on a warm, summer day to heat up and kill the bugs.
Bed bugs hide in tiny crevices of furniture or in the cracks and openings in the wall. Once bedding has been removed and treated, these areas should be vacuumed, sprayed and examined for bugs before placing the bedding back in the area.
Enclose mattresses in bed bug-proof encasements to prevent any lingering bugs from obtaining food. Use bed-bug traps underneath the legs of the bed to monitor the number of bugs. These traps are sticky and catch the bugs before they can get back on the bed. If there are no bugs for several weeks, the homeowner can be assured of successful bed bug removal.
A bed bug infestation is difficult to remove from the home. Pest control companies have the most success in ridding a home of the infestation, though the concentrated efforts of the homeowner sometimes succeed.
