To brew coffee in a coffee maker, put ground coffee in the filter, and pour cold water into the machine. Turn on the machine, and let the coffee brew. You need ground coffee, your coffee machine with the filter basket, a coffee carafe and cold water.
- Prepare the coffee machineMake sure the coffee machine, filter and carafe are clean from previous uses. Old coffee grounds and residue cause coffee to taste bitter. If necessary, wash all the parts with warm, soapy water and dry them.
- Add the coffee to the filter basket
If your coffee machine uses a paper filter, put that in first. Using 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for each 6 ounces of water, add the coffee to the filter basket. Use finely ground coffee to make strong coffee. A coarser grind makes milder coffee. Use fresh grounds for the best flavor. Do not use coffee grounds more than one time.
- Add water to the coffee maker
Pour 6 ounces of cold water into water reservoir of the coffee machine for each cup of coffee. Consider using filtered or bottled water if your tap water is softened, or if it has a strong mineral or chlorine taste.
- Turn on the machine
Turn the machine on, set to the brew setting and let it run until it stops. Serve the coffee immediately, or pour it into an insulated thermos to keep it fresh for up to 45 minutes.
