There are numerous kinds of trim paint that would be suitable for whatever job you have in mind. Trim paints usually come in three different finishes: Satin/Eggshell, Flat/Matte and Semi-gloss. The type of finish you need determines what brand of paint you should buy.
For low-luster paints such as satin and eggshell finish, Ace Hardware's Clark and Kensington paint brand ranked number one in a Consumer Reports study. It received positive reviews, with Consumer Report saying that it hid marks well and left a smooth finish. Its relative inexpensiveness and durability also earned good marks. In a different report, Behr Premium Plus Ultra paint ranked number one in all three finishes, making it another great choice for trim painting. It was noted as being easy to clean, and only one coat was needed. Valspar, and Benjamin Moore paint brands also received good reviews by Consumer Report in the Flat/Matte and Semi-gloss categories, though they were generally more expensive than other brands and did not perform as well. When choosing a paint, Consumer Report also suggests looking for paints that are low-VOC and relatively inexpensive. Low-VOC paints have reduced toxicity levels from the paint fumes; this has been done to protect the consumer.
