To remove tar from clothes, scrape, pretreat, apply enzymatic laundry detergent then wash the garment in the hottest water possible, recommends Good Housekeeping. If that does not remove the stain, blot it with dry cleaning solvent.
When applying a stain pretreating product or dry cleaning solvent, apply it slowly and be careful not to spread the stain. Work from the outer edge to the center of the tar stain. Saturating the stain or rubbing it from side to side can make it spread, which will create a bigger stain to remove.
When applying dry cleaning solvent, use a clean cloth or cotton balls, fold up some paper towels to place under the stained area then apply the solvent to the stain's surface, according to Good Housekeeping.
