Eliminating food sources, using an odor repellent and installing sprinklers are good repellents for coyotes. Keep trash cans locked up, and take in pet food at night. Coyotes look for food, so remove any potential food source, including those that attract small rodents, to keep coyotes away.
Odor repellents such as wolf urine and moth balls are also effective methods. Place these odor deterrents around the yard and in trash cans to mask food smells. They should be regularly changed and applied for continued effectiveness. A sudden burst from a water sprinkler sends coyotes running. Motion-activated or blinking lights as well as loud noises also serve as coyote deterrents.
