Good shrubs for a privacy screen include rose of Sharon and north privet. For evergreen hedges, consider plants such as Korean boxwood or Emerald Arborvitae. When selecting plants for the hedge, consider the height of the mature shrub, especially if planting under electrical lines.
Space the shrubs for the hedge closer than for normal planting, but provide enough space for healthy growth. Consult the U.S. Department of Agriculture's plant hardiness zones for hardiness in the planting location. If there is an abundance of width for the hedge, planting a double or triple row results in a thicker screen that provides more privacy than a single one.
