Organic and natural pesticides are effective ways to eliminate and control spider mite populations. Plant-based oils such as canola, cottonseed and neem oils can be sprayed on infected plants. Clove, mint, cinnamon and rosemary oils are also acaricides that are known to kill mites.
The use of chemical pesticides may only worsen a spider mite infestation because the harsh chemicals also kill the spider mite's natural enemies, such as beetles and bugs. Strategic release or use of these insects, along with other controlling agents, can help reduce the spider mite population. Spraying water forcefully on infected plants regularly and providing adequate irrigation can prevent a more serious infestation. With insecticides, users should always test the product on the plant to make sure that it is safe to use.
