Citronella, lemon eucalyptus and commercial mosquito repellents that contain DEET are options to effectively repel mosquitoes. Picaridin, also called icaridin, repels mosquitoes as effectively as DEET.
Products that contain 30 percent lemon eucalyptus, 20 percent picaridin or 25 percent DEET effectively repel mosquitoes. To work effectively, the repellents are applied according to the instructions on the product label and reapplied periodically while outdoors.
Products that contain DEET should contain 15 percent or less of the ingredient for safety reasons. Citronella is typically used in candles or torches outdoors to repel mosquitoes in a large area, while lemon eucalyptus, DEET and picaridin are applied topically.
