Good chair designs for people with back pain are those that offer a sturdy base and adequate lumbar support for the lower back. The seat height of the chair, arm rest height and angle of the back rest should be adjustable.
Chairs with an adjustable seat are preferable to those without, as the height of the chair should allow for the user's feet to be flat on the floor with knees only slightly above the chair seat. Good design requires that the height of arm rests be adjustable as properly supported arms reduce the risk of strain to the neck and back while sitting for long periods of time. The angle of the backrest should also be adjustable to allow maximum support to natural curve of the spine, especially in the lumbar region.
