The GE Profile dishwasher was recalled starting Aug. 9, 2012, due to a possible fire hazard caused by an electrical fault in the dishwasher's heating element. At the time of the recall, 15 incidents of heating element failure had been documented, resulting in seven cases of fire and smoke.
No injuries have been reported, and the recall is the most recent affecting GE Profile dishwashers as of February 2015. It applies to various models made between March 2006 and July 2006 and between November 2006 and April 2008.
Not all models are subject to the recall, so consumers should check the model number and serial number to determine if a specific dishwasher is affected. A tag containing the numbers is inside the unit to the left of the tub. To verify if a dishwasher is subject to the recall, consumers can check the numbers on the General Electric website or by calling the recall hotline. As of February 2015, the recall hotline number is 866-918-8760.
A dishwasher included in the recall should not be used, and consumers should remove electrical power to the dishwasher. Consumers with a dishwasher that has been recalled are entitled to free repair or a rebate offer toward the purchase of a new dishwasher.
