Kerosene suitable for home heaters is available from gas stations around the country. This type of kerosene is known as K-1 grade and may be purchased off the shelf or from the pump under various brand names.
K-1 kerosene is either clear or dyed red. However, color is not enough to identify the grade of kerosene. Many jurisdictions have laws in place that require vendors to clearly mark kerosene pumps and containers with the correct grade information. Lower sulfur levels allow K-1 kerosene to burn cleaner than K-2 grade kerosene. Individuals using the wrong grade of kerosene can invalidate their heaters' warranties. K-1 kerosene is also referred to as 1-K kerosene.
