A four-cycle gas-powered trimmer is easier to start, quieter, better for the environment and more efficient than a two-cycle trimmer, according to This Old House. A four-cycle trimmer is also a better choice for large areas with a lot of brush to cut.
A four-cycle trimmer offers a larger cutting swath than a two-cycle variety, up to 18 inches wide. These trimmers also offer options such as a brush-cutting package with handlebars, a blade and shoulder straps. Four-cycle trimmers are more costly, though, averaging $300 and higher compared to a price tag of less than $200 for most two-cycle options.
