To fix a door frame, apply wood filler to the crack, sand down the filler, and then apply latex interior paint to the patch. You need a hammer, finishing nails, a putty knife, wood filler, fine-grit sandpaper, cloth, a paintbrush and interior latex paint.
- Secure loose molding
Use a hammer to install finishing nails in all loose areas of the molding.
- Fill in the crack
Remove the strike plate if needed. Apply wood filler to the crack with a putty knife, and allow the filler to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Sand down the wood filler
Attach a small sheet of fine-grit sandpaper to a power sander or sanding block. Run the sandpaper over the filler until the filler is smooth.
- Wipe away the dust
Wipe a dry cloth along the wood filler to remove excess dust. Wipe the molding with a tack cloth to rid the area of leftover dust and to allow for painting.
- Paint over the patch
Select a latex interior paint that matches the color of your molding. Dip the paintbrush into the paint, and paint over the patch until it matches the molding. Allow the paint to dry, and apply additional coats if needed.
