How Do You Fix the Backing of a Rug?

To fix the backing of a rug, wash and dry the rug, prepare the work area, apply a layer of liquid latex, press cheesecloth onto the latex, allow the first layer of liquid latex to dry, and apply a second layer. Cheesecloth helps to strengthen the back of the rug.

  1. Wash and dry the rug

Wash the rug normally, and air dry it out in the sun. Ensure that the rug is completely dry before proceeding.

  2. Prepare the work area

Lay newspaper on a table or work counter. Place the rug up-side-down on the work surface, and scrape of any loose backing with a scrub brush. Shake well to remove any particles.

  3. Apply a layer of liquid latex

Purchase a can of liquid latex. Using wide bristle paintbrush, apply the liquid latex in short, overlapping stokes. Ensure that you have an even layer of liquid latex on the back of the rug.

  4. Press cheesecloth onto the liquid latex

Use a pair of scissors to cut cheesecloth to match the shape and size of your rug. Place the cheesecloth on the liquid latex while it is still wet, and press gently. Gently tap your paintbrush against the cheesecloth until it is firmly secured to the rug. Allow the latex to dry for 24 hours before proceeding.

  5. Apply a second layer of liquid latex

Cover and seal the cheesecloth completely with a second layer of liquid latex. Allow the latex to dry completely before using the rug.
