You need to get a special palm tree fertilizer, which can be found at most garden supply centers. The fertilizer needs considerably more nitrogen and potassium than phosphorus with a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium ratio of 3-1-3. Choose a fertilizer with magnesium if you have sandy soil, which has a ratio of 2-1-3-1. Other fertilizer ratios suitable for palm trees are 8-4-12-4 or 8-2-12-4. Make sure to use granular or spike-form fertilizer that is slowly released, working over a period of three months.
Apply fertilizer during mid-spring or summer every year. If you are using granular fertilizer, apply 1 1/2 pounds for every 100 square feet of canopy, four times a year, or reduce this amount to 1 pound every 100 square feet of canopy and apply six times a year. Do not let the fertilizer touch the trunk of the tree. If you are using spikes, drive them into the ground around the tree a foot away from the trunk.
After spreading the fertilizer, water the area thoroughly until the first 2 feet of soil is moist.
