The Caterpillar 3116 is a marine engine that can produce up to 350 brake horsepower at 2,800 rpm. The engine displaces 402 cubic inches of air at a compression ratio of 16:1.
Weighing 1,500 pounds, the 3116 is an in-line four-cylinder engine that has a cooling system liquid capacity of 28 gallons and a lube oil capacity of 25 gallons. It features a belt-driven alternator, a dry-type air intake and electric starting as standard. Some optional equipment are a walker AirSep air filter, single and dual instrument panels, and an oil pressure and water temperature contactor. Caterpillar claims that the engine is capable of running for 250 hours before needing an oil change.
