The price of AC refrigerant varies depending on the model of the air conditioner that is installed at a house or commercial building. Older models typically use R-22 as its refrigerant liquid and, as of 2015, the price of this liquid ranges between $35 to $175 per pound.
The price of R-22 has seen an increase since the EPA released a mandate in 2009 banning the production of the liquid and compatible machines. By comparison, newer AC system models generally use the more environmentally-friendly R-410A refrigerant instead. The price of the R-410A can range between three to five times less than the equivalent amount of R-22.
