A homemade terrarium is easy to make and excellent for decorating a room. They can be constructed in less than a half hour with materials that are readily available at garden stores. A terrarium is made up of a container, pebbles, potting soil, sand and plants.
The first step is to find a glass jar, vase or anything similar. Next, fill the bottom of the container up to 2 inches with small pebbles. Add a layer of 2 1/2 inches of potting soil that is formulated for succulents and cacti. Remove the cacti or succulent plants from their pots, and use a spoon to plant them each an inch apart in the container. Make sure the roots are completely buried. Once a pleasing arrangement has been made, cover the soil with 1/4 inch of white sand. Add other decorations such as stones if desired. Water the plants on a biweekly basis, and keep the terrarium in direct sunlight.
