Some easy DIY home repairs include fixing leaky washing machines, running toilets, wall dents, squeaky door hinges, stuck sliding windows and slamming doors. Each of these repairs requires items easily found in most hardware and home improvement stores.
The most likely cause of a leaky washing machine is a damaged water hose. To fix this, turn off the water supply, remove the damaged hose, and install a new hose. Use steel-braided hoses for the most durability.
There are several reasons why a toilet runs. To pinpoint the problem, remove the tank's lid. If the water level is too high, adjust the float downward. If the water level is okay, test the rubber flapper at the bottom of the tank by using food coloring to see it the color seeps into the toilet bowl. If it does, turn off the water supply, remove the flapper, and take it to the hardware store for a replacement.
Apply plaster with a putty knife to repair wall dents. Let it dry for at least 24 hours before painting.
Use WD-40 or petroleum jelly to silence noisy door hinges. Repeat applications as needed until there is no more squeaking.
Unstick sliding windows with a silicone spray lubricant. Use a soft cloth to apply the lubricant to the window's tracks.
