Brick molding is a type of exterior trim placed around windows and doors. Despite its name, brick molding is made from wood, vinyl or composite materials, never from brick.
The primary function of exterior trim such as brick molding is to seal gaps that occur between a wall and a window or door. The installation of trim prevents water from seeping into the wall from the outside. Exterior trim also serves a decorative function by providing visual contrast to the area around windows and doors. Wood is the traditional material used for trim; however, vinyl and composite products are gaining popularity due to their lower required maintenance.
