Some different types of cypress trees include the Monterey cypress, Leyland cypress, Nootka cypress and Cupressus sempervirens, or the Italian cypress. Other cypress types are the Bhutan cypress and weeping cypress.
The Italian cypress is a tree grown for its columnar habit and dense, blue-green, fine-textured foliage. It thrives in hardiness zones 7 through 9. It grows 20 to 30 feet tall and usually has a width of between 3 and 5 feet. It takes full sun but is tolerant of several types of soil.
The Monterey cypress is an endangered species of cypress that’s native only to Monterey County, Calif. The struggles this cypress endures to survive in its habitat often result in a tree that’s a bit bent and twisted. Protected from salty sea winds and pathogens and given enough water and care, the Monterey cypress can grow into a straight tree that’s 100 feet tall. Monterey cypresses are monoecious, which means they are either male or female. At least one tree was known to have lived to 284 years old.
