Two basic types of landscape fabric are woven and nonwoven. Woven landscape fabric is made from polypropylene or linen and has minuscule holes that allow nutrients and water to get into the soil. The soil must be worked and amended before it is covered with woven landscape fabric.
Nonwoven landscape fabric can also be made from polypropylene as well as polyester. It is installed to control weeds and therefore suffocates the roots of plants in a flower bed. Nonwoven landscape fabric is excellent to place under rock or gravel beds. Whether nonwoven or woven, landscape fabric needs to be covered with mulch to protect it from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
