Rubbermaid first began making plastic containers in the 1980s. The first plastic product manufactured by Rubbermaid was a dish pan that was introduced in 1956.
Rubbermaid, originally called Wooster Rubber Company, introduced its first plastic product and changed its name to Rubbermaid in 1956. Prior to this date, it manufactured rubber kitchenware and dustpans. In 1962, it produced the first plastic trash can. During the 1970s Rubbermaid added sales parties and other items, such as skis and motorboats, to its catalog. It wasn't until the 1980s that Rubbermaid introduced its storage containers. These containers were brightly colored and were introduced along with some microwave cookware.
