City public works departments are typically responsible for sanitation and general city maintenance, including residential areas that require constant upkeep. Residential sanitation generally includes trash and recycling collection, the handling of hazardous waste, leaf and holiday tree collection, the cleaning of streets and snow removal.

Some cities, such as Washington D.C. and Phoenix, Arizona, have set trash pickup schedules and amended holiday trash pickup schedules. Each of these cities publishes trash collection schedules on its official website, under the Department of Public Works, and offers alternatives for city residents who may reside in areas that the city does not service.

For example, the city of Mount Pleasant in north central Arkansas does not provide trash collection to its residents. However, the website of the White River District, which is the 10-county region that encompasses Izard County and, in turn, Mount Pleasant, offers a list of the relevant licensed trash collection services and contact phone numbers.

If a private company, such as Waste Management, handles your trash pickup, then pickup times are available at its website.
