Some cures for water hammer in household plumbing systems include installing air chambers, adding air to existing ones, or installing water hammer arresters. Water hammer arresters provide the most permanent cure without a loss of water pressure.
Air chambers provide a pad inside pipes as high pressure water comes to a stop. Because water slowly absorbs air, homeowners must periodically replenish it by draining their pipes and allowing air to enter their systems. Water hammer arresters use pistons and gaskets to separate water from air inside pipes, while still allowing the air to act as a cushion. Installing them close to the valves near the water hammer problem eliminates the need for homeowners to repeatedly drain their systems.
