Founded by Carl and Shirley Sontheimer in 1971, Cuisinart originally imported stainless steel cookware and food processors from a French company called Robot-Coupe. Carl Sontheimer, a physicist educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, designed his own version of a food processor. He spent several years perfecting his design by altering the blades and accessory disks until it performed better than any other food processor available at the time. To gain attention in the American sales market, he offered his product to famous chefs and television food personalities, such as Julia Childs and James Beard. Their reviews of the food processor helped establish the Cuisinart brand as essential for home cooks everywhere. It is estimated that between 150,000 and 250,000 Cuisinart food processors were sold in 1976, with $50 million in sales by 1977.
