Creative uses for rocks include pebble mosaics, Inspiration stones, and replacing sand or dirt with pebbles and small rocks. More ideas can be found at gardening and home improvement websites such as Networx, Homedit and The Garden Glove.
Mosaics are easy projects that come in many different sizes. They use pebbles, rock shards and other small pieces of hard items to add texture and images to otherwise smooth surfaces. Good choices for projects are coasters, stepping stones, back splashes and mirror frames. To construct a mosaic, stones are laid out in the desired pattern, then adhered to the surface using plaster or construction adhesive.
Small to medium smooth stones with a flat surface on one side make excellent inspiration stones. Inspirational messages are applied to the stones using paints and a fine tip brush or paint markers. Using a stencil gives a crisper edge to the lettering. Alternately, clippings from magazines adhered with glue and then finished with lacquer in a decoupage process also create beautiful inspiration stones.
A zen garden using fine rocks instead of sand makes an alternative with less mess. Clear glass jars half filled with small stones create a secure toothbrush holder. Potted plants with rock coverings hold in dirt and water securely. A tray filled with a layer of pebbles and a range of larger stones becomes an indoor "sandbox" for kids.
