Slow cooking ribs in a crock pot provides a fall-off-the-bone meal with few ingredients. A simple recipe that serves 4 to 6 people calls for 3 pounds of pork spare ribs, salt, pepper, one diced onion and 8 ounces of barbecue sauce.
Do not pre-heat the slow cooker for this recipe. Add the diced onion to the crock pot. Rub the ribs with salt and pepper, then add on top of the onion. Pour all of the barbecue sauce on top. Slow cook for 8 to 10 hours and avoid lifting the lid to retain moisture.
For maximum flavor, try an alternative rub for the ribs that adds 3 tablespoons of liquid smoke, 1/4 cup of brown sugar, and two cloves of garlic, in addition to salt and pepper. For a sweeter taste, slow cook the ribs in 1/2 cup of cola for 8 to 9 hours, discard the liquid, then slow cook for one hour with the barbecue sauce. Also consider a salty, savory flavor by replacing the barbecue sauce with 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and 1 can of tomato sauce in addition to the rub. For ribs that stay on the bone, cook for around 5 hours.
