What Is a Compressor's Function on an Air Conditioner?

The compressor in an air conditioner draws in cool, low-pressure refrigerant gas and squeezes it until the gas turns into a hot, high-pressure gas. The hot gas is pushed into a condenser coil where cool air from the outside is blown over it to make the air warm.

An air conditioner's compressor uses a pumping action to squeeze the refrigerant and to make it move in a continuous cycle. An air conditioner has three other mechanical parts that make this cycle possible: a condenser that turns hot, high pressure gas from the compressor into a warm liquid; an expansion valve, which turns the warm liquid into a cool, low pressure liquid; and an evaporator which turns it into a cool, low-pressure gas, which is channeled back into the compressor.
