The Rival brand slow cooker is manufactured by Sunbeam Products, Inc., a subsidiary of Jarden Corporation, as of February 2015. It was first released at the Chicago National Housewares Show in 1971, and Rival slow cooker sales of $93 million were reported in 1975.
The Rival company was founded in 1932 in Kansas City, Missouri, by Henry J. Talge. It became popular through its O-Mat line of appliance products, such as the Juice-O-Mat, Broil-O-Mat and Can-O-Mat, and is also credited with introducing the first electric can opener. The Jarden Corporation acquired Rival under the Sunbeam brand in January 2005, along with the Oster, Coleman and Mr. Coffee brands, at a cost of $845 million.
