Maytag brand refrigerators are manufactured by Whirlpool Corporation. Maytag merged with Whirlpool in 2006, and is now a division of Whirlpool Corporation. Maytag refrigerators come in several styles, including one with a French door, a double-door design referred to as a side-by-side, and models with upper and lower freezer.
Maytag refrigerators typically feature a stainless steel outer design with two or three doors. The traditional freezer-on-top design has the door handle on the right or left side. The bottom-freezer-door model exceeds standard energy efficiency requirements. This model also allows users to view food in the freezer without bending. The side-by-side and French door models feature a built-in ice and water machine.
Maytag started out as a family-owned business, and the main product was washing machines. In the late 1890s, the company successfully developed a safer washer, which was called a threshing machine at the time. In the 1900s, Maytag continued innovating the washing machine and created the Pastime model, its first electric-motor washer. Gradually, Maytag branched out into designing and manufacturing other home appliances, such as dishwashers, ovens and refrigerators. The Maytag repairman, a long-time advertising character associated with the brand, has also evolved over the years. As of 2014, the Maytag repairman character is younger and more energized than the original.
