Homeowners can use commercial ice maker cleaners to sanitize a refrigerator's ice maker. An ice maker can also be cleaned with a liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water mixture or a mixture made of 1/2 cup of bleach dissolved in a 1-gallon bucket of water.
When cleaning an ice maker, it is important to switch the ice maker to the off position. The icemaker drain cap should be removed to allow water to drain from the machine.
Pour the ice maker cleaning solution into the designated water pan as directed in the refrigerator manual, select the Clean option on the appliance and allow the ice cycle to run. Dispose of the ice and replace the ice bin. If using a bleach and water mixture or dishwashing soap, remove the ice bin and wipe down the interior and exterior portions of the machine.
